The Atlanta Falcons announced on Monday that Tua Tagovailoa would start as the team’s quarterback for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This announcement came even as Michael Penix Jr., who was contending with Tagovailoa for the role, had just resumed full practices following a torn ACL. Despite the competition, Tagovailoa’s preseason performance raised doubts about his suitability for the starting position.
On Friday, Tagovailoa’s status for the opening game took an unexpected turn. He did not participate in the open portion of practice due to an oblique injury sustained on Thursday. With the game against the Steelers only 48 hours away, his participation became uncertain.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport later confirmed that the Falcons officially ruled Tagovailoa out for the game against the Steelers. This announcement significantly shifted the team’s plans.
Concern had already surrounded Tagovailoa’s position. While Penix struggled last season following his backup tenure to Kirk Cousins, Tagovailoa underperformed during the preseason. In his two appearances, he completed 10 of 13 passes for 117 yards. He recorded no touchdowns or interceptions, failing to instill confidence for the upcoming regular season.
Both veteran quarterback Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand surpassed Tagovailoa’s preseason efforts. With Penix already confirmed out for Week 1, Rush will now start, and Strand will serve as the backup quarterback.
Tagovailoa’s oblique injury could take one to three weeks to heal if minor, or longer if more serious. Missing just one game adds pressure on him, as fans have already expressed doubts about his capability. The Falcons’ quarterback lineup remains under scrutiny as the season progresses.
