Tua Tagovailoa Starts for Falcons Amid Quarterback Changes

3 weeks ago 0

The Atlanta Falcons are featuring Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for the Week 1 game. This decision comes while Michael Penix Jr. is recovering from a partially torn ACL suffered late in the previous season.

Tagovailoa will be the sixth quarterback to start a season opener for the Falcons recently, highlighting the team’s struggle for consistency at the position. Matt Ryan held the starting position in 2021 before moving to the Indianapolis Colts. Subsequent seasons saw starts from Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Kirk Cousins, and Michael Penix Jr.

“You want to prove people wrong,” said newly appointed head coach Kevin Stefanski, emphasizing his confidence in Tagovailoa. The coach, previously with the Cleveland Browns, was hired after Raheem Morris was relieved of his duties.

In the 2026 preseason, Tagovailoa showcased his skills against his former team, the Miami Dolphins. Despite his reputation for injuries, he boasts a standout season in 2023 with the Dolphins, reaching the Pro Bowl with 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and leading the team to the playoffs.

The NFC South offers a competitive landscape where any team could rise. Last year, the Carolina Panthers topped the division with an 8-9 record. The Falcons aim to break their division title drought, last winning in 2016 when they also advanced to the Super Bowl.

The Falcons’ 2026 season kicks off on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, presenting an opportunity for Tagovailoa to prove his capability as a starter.
