Twitch Streamer Hasan Piker Criticizes NJ Governor Over Anti-ICE Protests

Marxist political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill during a livestream on Sunday. He accused the Democratic governor of supporting the Trump administration’s immigration policies through her approach to anti-ICE protests at a Newark detention center.

Piker expressed his criticism after Sherrill defended the deployment of state police around protests outside the Delaney Hall detention facility. She stated her intention to prevent unrest from becoming an excuse for expanding federal immigration operations in New Jersey.

Governor Sherrill stated, “I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext.” These remarks were aired in a news segment that Piker was reacting to during his stream.

Piker quickly mocked Sherrill’s reasoning, stating, “Yeah, I won’t give ICE a pretext. So I’m going to ensure that they don’t have to do anything because I’m going to do it myself. That’s basically what the meta is here for this blue state and its new blue governor.”

Piker’s Critique of the Democratic Party

The political commentator extended his criticism beyond Sherrill’s handling of the protests, targeting the Democratic Party’s centrist wing. “This is the centrist wing of the Democratic Party, ladies and gentlemen. This is what happens,” Piker said.

His comments coincided with ongoing anti-ICE demonstrations outside Delaney Hall. Activists have alleged poor conditions for detainees and inadequate food provisions. The Department of Homeland Security has denied these claims.

Supporting the Trump Administration’s Agenda

Later in the stream, Piker accused Sherrill of advancing President Trump’s immigration agenda. “The story is not the far-left activists continuing to rage at ICE in New Jersey,” he said. “The real story is the horrifying conditions inside of this facility and the governor acting as though she’s powerless to stop it, while using her power to work alongside the Trump administration.”

He remarked on the presence of state troopers in anti-riot gear, saying, “These are state troopers that are brutalizing New Jerseyans.”

Treatment of Journalists and Criticism of Democrats

Piker further accused authorities of mistreating journalists covering the protests, comparing their actions to an occupying force. He referenced an incident where an Associated Press photographer was reportedly injured.

In his broadcast, Piker also criticized Democratic lawmakers on their immigration stance, claiming that some have supported immigration enforcement measures. “Democrats have absolutely participated in this process,” he stated, emphasizing the need for elected officials willing to actively challenge the system.

Piker has been active in supporting progressive candidates, traveling across the country for Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed candidates. During his livestream, he voiced support for billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and quoted Mao Zedong.

Earlier this year, Piker campaigned in New Jersey for congressional candidate Adam Hamamy, defending him amid media scrutiny.

Governor Sherrill’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
