The United States announced on Sunday that it conducted ‘self-defense strikes’ against military targets in southern Iran over the weekend. These actions are the latest in a series of military confrontations over the past week.
Following these strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps reported targeting a military base, asserting it was in retaliation for an American attack on a communications facility in southern Iran.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s military reported on social media early Monday that its air defenses were addressing ‘hostile missile and drone attacks.’ The origin of these attacks remained unclear. The connections to the U.S. or Iranian military strikes were not immediately confirmed, although Kuwait hosts U.S. military bases.
These military exchanges could potentially complicate ongoing U.S.-Iranian negotiations concerning a framework to end the ongoing war.
According to U.S. Central Command, the latest strikes on Iran’s Persian Gulf coast focused on radar and command and control sites for drones in the city of Goruk and the Island of Qeshm. The statement described these actions as a response to ‘aggressive Iranian actions,’ including the downing of a U.S. military drone over international waters.
The Revolutionary Guards’ statement, released early Monday via Iran’s state news agency, confirmed that Iran had targeted a military base. They labeled it as retaliation for a U.S. strike on a communications tower on a southern island. The statement cautioned that future attacks would provoke a different response from Iran.
The U.S. strike appears to be the third series of American military actions in southern Iran over the past week.
