U.S. and Saudi Arabia Conduct Precision Strikes Against Iran-Aligned Militants

The United States and Saudi Arabia conducted coordinated precision strikes in eastern Iraq on Tuesday. These strikes targeted militant groups aligned with Iran, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The operation aimed at groups directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to attack U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.

Military Operation Details

The joint operation targeted multiple logistics hubs and weapons sites. This action followed a series of unsuccessful drone attacks over the last 72 hours, reportedly directed by the IRGC. CENTCOM confirmed that the IRGC also attempted a surprise attack using ballistic missiles launched from Iran aimed at American bases in the Middle East. These missiles were successfully intercepted by U.S. defenses, maintaining a high state of readiness.

Reports from Reuters indicated that the IRGC claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles at a U.S.-operated air base and a CENTCOM facility in Jordan. They described these actions as retaliation against U.S. operations targeting Iranian interests.

CENTCOM’s statement notes that from February to April, over 600 attempted attacks against U.S. citizens and facilities occurred in Iraq. These incidents highlight the ongoing threat from IRGC-backed proxy forces in the region. CENTCOM warns that such attacks must cease to avoid further U.S. military responses.

Rajan Menon, a professor emeritus of International Relations at the City College of New York, noted, “There’s nothing in place that qualifies as a ceasefire, so be it the US-Saudi strikes on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, or Iran’s targeting on Tuesday of the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan, which the US uses, no one should be surprised. Indeed, we should expect more such incidents.”

Diplomatic Developments

The military actions coincided with a diplomatic meeting at the White House between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran was a primary topic of their discussions, focusing on the ongoing conflict and progress with regional agreements, such as the trilateral framework in Lebanon and the Abraham Accords.

In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Netanyahu described his meeting with Trump as “great,” highlighting their mutual commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, which poses threats to the U.S. and global peace, as well as Israel’s existence.

Netanyahu pointed out Iran’s history of aggression towards neighbors in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, stressing the increased danger if Iran were to gain nuclear capabilities.
