The Trump administration has announced a new wave of import bans affecting Canadian goods, intensifying trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The bans, set to start later this month, include Canadian motorcycles, some dairy products, and most types of alcohol.
The decision comes shortly after Canada imposed tariffs on $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. This move was in response to similar tariffs placed by the U.S. on Canadian products of equal value. The U.S. accuses Canada of unfair trade practices, while Canada argues that the U.S. demands are unreasonable.
Senior administration officials stated that as of 12:01 AM on September 29, the U.S. will enforce a complete ban on most Canadian alcohol imports. Canadian motorcycles, whey, molasses, and non-alcoholic beer will also face bans on the same date. These measures were set into motion by proclamations signed by President Trump.
Additionally, a new 50% tariff will be applied to cheese products, steel, aluminum, and bamboo furniture from Canada starting next Tuesday. Conversely, some tariffs on toilet paper, cement, and fishing rod parts have been removed after further government research into their impact.
