In an interview, Ramsey explained the circumstances leading to Gilman’s arrest. He indicated that Gilman was traveling to Moldova in November 2021 and had no plans to visit Russia. However, due to severe illness, Gilman had to stop in Moscow. Initially recovering with relatives, his health declined again, causing complications en route to the U.S. embassy.

Russian police approached Gilman, suspecting him of intoxication. Allegations arose of assault against officers, resulting in his arrest. Ramsey described this incident as the beginning of a nightmare that has expanded since then.

Release and Return to the U.S.

The U.S. State Department labeled Gilman a wrongful detainee and confirmed his release was part of an exchange, with no other concessions given. Former President Donald Trump announced Gilman’s return, detailing discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and emphasizing the humanitarian grounds for Gilman’s release.

Trump praised various officials, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, for their roles in facilitating the release. Gilman, returning with his mother Nancy, expressed a desire for a cheeseburger upon landing, highlighting his anticipated reunion with loved ones.
