U.S. Men’s National Team Faces Crucial World Cup Match

1 hour ago 0

The U.S. men’s national soccer team is off to a strong start in the World Cup, securing the top position in their group and gaining a favorable route in the knockout stage. They will play against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

This match is vital for the U.S. team, as they haven’t defeated a European team since 2021. A victory would be their first in a World Cup knockout match since 2002. Although Bosnia and Herzegovina is considered less powerful than teams like France or Spain, they have proven their potential. Ranked 64th by FIFA, they surprised Italy with a playoff victory and advanced with a draw against Canada and a win over Qatar.

Mauricio Pochettino, U.S. coach, emphasized the importance of the match in a statement on Tuesday. “For us, it’s the final of the World Cup. If we don’t think in this way, we are going to struggle,” he said.

The U.S. team expects to have a fully fit starting lineup, with winger Christian Pulisic returning. Pulisic, who left the opening game due to a calf injury, contributed to two significant group victories, against Paraguay and Australia, despite sitting out the second match. He reentered as a substitute in the game against Turkey and reported feeling in good shape, ready to play on Wednesday.

On Bosnia’s side, the spotlight is on Esmir Bajraktarević, an American-born winger. Bajraktarević, born in Appleton, Wisconsin, is of Bosnian descent. His parents fled Bosnia during the 1990s conflict, settling in the U.S. Bajraktarević, who switched allegiance to Bosnia in 2024, was pivotal in securing Bosnia’s World Cup spot by scoring the decisive penalty against Italy.

Sergej Barbarez, Bosnia’s coach, expressed pride in Bajraktarević’s commitment to his heritage: “He can feel the jersey he’s wearing. It means very much to him. He knows where he belongs.” Bosnia is making its second World Cup appearance, with the first being in 2014.
