The U.S. Navy has identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards as the sailor who went missing on July 1 when a helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea. Edwards, who was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, was lost after the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter he was aboard encountered difficulties. While three of the four crew members were rescued, Edwards was not found, leading to the suspension of the search after 102 hours, according to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.
Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, expressed his condolences, stating, “The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family.” He remembered Edwards as a “fearless leader” whose legacy will endure.
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao announced Edwards would be promoted posthumously to the rank of captain. In his statement, Cao expressed gratitude for the efforts of those involved in the search and support of Edwards’s family. Edwards, originally from Oakland, Oregon, had dedicated 20 years to the U.S. Navy, beginning his career by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and commissioning through the Naval ROTC. He acquired his aviator “Wings of Gold” as a helicopter pilot in 2008 and held positions in various naval groups before leading the HSC-5 squadron last year.
The search operation for Edwards spanned over 14,000 square miles, involving multiple naval and air units. Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two children. Rebecca Edwards released a statement expressing deep thanks to those who participated in the search, noting her husband’s lifelong dedication to his country and his roles as a leader, father, and foundation of their family.
The three survivors from the helicopter were safely returned to the USS George H.W. Bush. The Navy is investigating the cause of the emergency landing, though they have found no evidence suggesting hostile action was involved.
