UCLA Triumphs Over Wisconsin

Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach marked his first starting appearance for UCLA by passing for 264 yards, leading the No. 12 Bruins to a 17-7 victory against Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl. This win allowed UCLA to maintain its status as the sole unbeaten team in the Big Ten.

The Bruins’ defense prevented a Wisconsin comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, blocking the Badgers on a fourth-and-two play. Despite penalties totaling 78 yards, UCLA excelled with 13 third-down conversions.

Impressive Performance from Dieffenbach

Dieffenbach, stepping in for injured quarterback Nico Iamaleava, orchestrated a pivotal 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. UCLA’s record improved to 6-0 under coach Bob Chesney, achieving bowl eligibility.

Although recognized for its powerful running game, UCLA faced challenges as Wisconsin’s defense, ranked highly at No. 15 in total defense and ninth in passing yards allowed, restricted the Bruins to a mere 3.2 yards per carry. Heisman candidate Wayne Knight was restricted to 29 all-purpose yards but managed his 12th touchdown of the season.

Dieffenbach’s Poise Under Pressure

With Dieffenbach under center, the Bruins put faith in his ability as he completed 22 of 33 passes, nearly matching Iamaleava’s best performance. His standout play included a 21-yard pass to Jalen Saint Paul, setting up a touchdown, and commanding drives that led to critical scores.

Dieffenbach showed composure, excelling on third downs with UCLA achieving 13 out of 20 conversions. He experienced a single interception from a Hail Mary attempt and endured only one sack.

Strong Defensive Display

UCLA’s defense held formidable ground, limiting Wisconsin to 214 yards despite missing key player Rodrick Pleasant. The Bruins’ secondary restrained Wisconsin’s passing efforts, conceding only 66 passing yards. Wisconsin’s quarterback Colton Joseph rushed for 71 yards and one touchdown, presenting strategic challenges.

In spite of absent takeaways, UCLA’s defense made crucial stops, including a pivotal sack from Jalen Woods that thwarted a field goal attempt. The Bruins maintained pressure, limiting Wisconsin’s scoring opportunities throughout the game.

The defense stood firm late in the game by stopping key runs and executing defensive plays that secured UCLA’s victory.
