University of Washington Cancels Hasan Piker Lecture Due to Planning Issues

The University of Washington has canceled a planned lecture by progressive Twitch commentator Hasan Piker, citing a flawed planning process. Piker, known for his far-left views and controversial statements, was scheduled to speak as part of the school’s 2026-27 Speaker Series. In a statement, the university explained the decision followed a review of the planning process.

An official statement from the university indicated that the process for organizing Piker’s participation did not meet the necessary standards for University-hosted Speaker Series events. The institution plans to update procedures to ensure future events meet their standards, aiming to elevate discussions on divisive topics during what it acknowledges as a polarized era in the country.

The cancellation has drawn criticism from First Amendment advocates. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a nonprofit civil liberties group, condemned the decision. In a social media post, FIRE urged the university to clarify the standards not met and how they were applied. They emphasized that while public universities can set event standards, they should not use these to cancel speakers due to their views.

Hasan Piker, a controversial figure, gained notoriety for remarks such as stating that America “deserved 9/11,” a comment he later retracted. Recent criticisms include his call for Democrats unsupportive of Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed to face consequences for not adhering to party lines. Piker suggested using “Marxist-Leninist” measures to enforce party unity.

His comments came shortly after El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., in the primary. Piker had previously supported El-Sayed on the campaign trail, where he will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November election.

Prominent Democratic strategist James Carville has also criticized Piker’s rhetoric, stating he would not remain with the Democratic Party if Piker becomes a significant influence. Carville expressed concerns about the party’s future direction, as Piker’s views gain visibility within its ranks.
