Unpleasant Heat and Humidity Expected in Northeast

3 weeks ago 0

The Northeast should prepare for some hot weather on Thursday and Friday. It’s bringing with it the threat of dangerous storms.

This week will introduce New York City to the year’s first widespread summer heat and humidity. The central United States has experienced this simmering weather recently, and now it’s moving east. The normally comfortable conditions on the East Coast will become less pleasant.

“I would say sweltering,” explained Bryan Ramsey from the National Weather Service in New York. While it won’t reach 100 degrees, Ramsey described the situation as uncomfortably sultry. He attributed this to a thick air mass following a warm front, which makes people feel sticky and damp. It also hinders the body’s ability to cool naturally.

The second week of June is typically when the first real warm spell occurs, but this year is different. April saw unseasonable 90-degree days in the region, but now a heavier dose of tropical moisture amplifies the discomfort.

Storms may disperse some of the heat. Highs across the East Coast are predicted to range between 90 to 95 degrees.

“Some of the temperatures are near record values,” remarked Bob Oravec at the Weather Prediction Center. It’s not extreme heat, but enough for caution.
