On Saturday, No. 19 USC faced Penn State in a tense match, securing a crucial away win. USC’s defense played a significant role by limiting Penn State to a field goal, maintaining a narrow lead. Jayden Maiava, USC’s quarterback, was instrumental in orchestrating an effective touchdown drive.

As the fourth quarter began, USC led 24-23 with 14:52 remaining. On third-and-five at USC’s 7-yard line, Rocco Becht’s pass was incomplete, leading to a 26-yard field goal by Ryan Barker, which decreased the USC lead.

Penn State ended the third quarter at USC’s 22-yard line. Becht connected with Brett Eskildsen for a 21-yard pass, followed by a timeout due to late shifts. This allowed USC to make substitutions, preventing Penn State from running the play in time.
Following several successful passes, including one to Andrew Rappleyea for 20 yards, Penn State advanced to USC’s 13-yard line. Becht’s scramble ended the third quarter.

Earlier, USC extended its lead to 24-20 with 5:38 left in the third quarter. The drive opened with Maiava’s passes to Trent Mosley and King Miller’s rushes, totaling 37 yards. On a critical fourth-and-one, King Miller advanced the ball to Penn State’s 21. Maiava’s subsequent pass and an option pitch to Miller culminated in a 13-yard touchdown run.

In the third quarter’s opening, USC’s onside kick was covered by Penn State on the Trojan 47-yard line. Despite several completions by Becht, Penn State settled for a 35-yard field goal by Barker.

Immediately before halftime, Penn State tied the game at 17. Following a timeout, Rocco Becht drove his team downfield, ending with Ryan Barker’s successful 48-yard field goal.

During this period, USC’s field goal regained its lead to 17-14, resulting from plays like Maiava’s 40-yard pass to Tanook Hines. However, a fumble was promptly recovered by USC, and a 37-yard field goal was completed.

The first quarter had seen both teams trading blows. USC initially went up 7-0 after Maiava’s touchdown pass to Trent Mosley. Penn State responded with a touchdown drive, capped by Becht’s pass to Andrew Rappleyea.

The USC coach, Lincoln Riley, noted at halftime that improvements were needed in limiting Penn State’s explosive plays, although he praised quarterback Maiava’s composure.
