A 17-year-old boy in Utah has been accused of killing his mother, Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, and his 8-year-old half-brother, Eli Painter. This arrest follows a 17-month investigation led by the Saratoga Springs police. The investigation involved numerous search warrants and extensive forensic testing.
On August 14, the teen was taken into custody and placed in juvenile detention following the screening of two counts of first-degree murder by the Utah County Attorney’s Office. Court documents indicate charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice have been filed against him in juvenile court.
Prosecutors aim to transfer the case to adult court, although the teen’s identity remains undisclosed due to his age. Police found the victims with gunshot wounds at their home on Willowbrook Lane on March 28, 2025, after responding to a call for medical assistance. Despite attempts to save them, both died.
A surveillance camera reportedly recorded an altercation around 11:30 p.m. the prior night, featuring voices believed to be the teen’s and the victims’. Gunshots were heard shortly afterward. Later footage allegedly depicts a masked figure, matching the teen’s build, walking through the neighborhood.
Investigators discovered gunshot residue on clothing linked to the teen. DNA evidence was also found beneath one victim’s fingernails. A search of his room revealed notes referencing forensic testing, according to police reports. No firearms were found except for BB guns.
Saratoga Springs Police Department Chief Andrew Burton stated that the inquiry included reviewing multiple types of evidence and conducting interviews. Federal and local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Utah State Crime Laboratory, supported the investigation.
The family of the victims expressed their gratitude to the authorities for their efforts. They underlined the impact of losing Jessica and Eli, describing Jessica as a devoted mother and Eli as a bright child. They urge holding the responsible individual fully accountable.
