PROVO, Utah — On the first anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University, the campus will close for a day of reflection. Dr. Jon Anderson, the university’s new president, shared his personal connection to the tragic event. Anderson, whose appointment came shortly before the fall 2026 semester, was previously president at Pennsylvania Western University.

Anderson detailed his family’s ties to the incident during an interview with Fox News Digital. His wife informed him of the shooting, which occurred on Sept. 10, 2025. Anderson described how his daughters and son-in-law were only ten yards away from the scene.

Kirk had been speaking at an event when he was killed. The assassination affected many on campus, prompting UVU to mark the day with empathy and remembrance.

Dr. Anderson expressed his commitment to aiding in the campus’s healing. “This place is resilient,” he affirmed. “Its people are determined to learn from everything that can be learned from that day.” UVU will be closed on Sept. 10, allowing individuals to process the event in their own way. Local organization Turning Point USA, founded by Kirk, will hold a memorial at the UCCU Center.

Anderson stated, “We want people to have their own space to heal.” There is also consideration for a permanent memorial, though discussions are ongoing. A group including board members and students are exploring how best to honor Kirk.

In terms of free speech, Anderson highlighted UVU’s role in providing a platform for diverse viewpoints. “Though politically neutral, we aspire to host civil dialogue,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of open debate in higher education.

As for the legal proceedings, Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin, has pleaded not guilty. His trial date may be set on Oct. 23, depending on the decision of Judge Tony Graf Jr. Should Robinson be convicted of aggravated murder, he could face the death penalty.

Kirk, who was 31 at the time of his death, left behind a wife and two children.
