Republican Senator Susan Collins has stated she will not be intimidated following the vandalism of one of her constituent offices in Maine. On Monday, the words “Trump Whore” were spray-painted on the entry doors of her office in Biddeford. A statement from Collins’ Chief of Staff, Katie Brown, confirmed the incident. A photograph of the damage was shared on social media by Maine state Senator Matt Harrington.
The Biddeford police department has launched an investigation into the vandalism. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Brown emphasized that, despite the incident, Collins and her team would not be deterred and would continue their work from the Biddeford office.
“Vandalism is unacceptable. Senator Collins and her staff will not be intimidated. Our Biddeford constituent service office remains open, and we will continue serving the people of Maine,” Brown said.
Democratic challenger Troy Jackson, formerly Maine Senate President, broke his silence on the matter late Monday. Jackson condemned the act, labeling it as “wrong.” He insisted that Collins and her staff should be able to perform their duties without intimidation.
“There’s no place for this in Maine. Vandalism and intimidation are wrong, full stop,”Jackson stated.
This incident occurs during a highly contested re-election campaign for Collins, who seeks a sixth term representing Maine, a state that leans Democratic in its voting patterns.
The political landscape has intensified as Collins faces Jackson in a race deemed critical for Democrats looking to regain control of the Senate. Their success hinges on trying to flip seats like Collins’.
Former Maine state Representative Austin Theriault also condemned the vandalism. He emphasized the importance of condemnation without hesitation, irrespective of political affiliation.
“I’m very confident that Sen. Collins herself would very quickly condemn this if the shoe was on the other foot,”
Theriault remarked. He also speculated about potential identity issues within the Maine Democratic Party.
Maine GOP Communications Director Kristina Parker attributed the act to what she described as the “radical left’s aggression.” She criticized the lack of civil discourse and expressed hope for a swift legal response.
Collins’ office is close to where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were involved in a fatal shooting in July. Following that incident, protestors marched to her Biddeford office to oppose her support for ICE funding.
Throughout her campaign, Collins has maintained bipartisan visibility. She was acknowledged for casting her 10,000th consecutive Senate vote this summer. However, she has faced scrutiny from both parties over various issues, including her stance on trade tariffs and judicial confirmations.
