Lindsey Schmidt served in the Army for nine years, accompanying Green Berets on missions in Iraq. Now living in Virginia, she transitions from military life to showcasing a different narrative. Known as “Xena,” she now embraces red lipstick and stilettos to tell her story.
Schmidt is participating in the 21st Pin-Ups For Vets annual fundraiser calendar for 2027. This calendar features 13 female veterans photographed in vintage styles. “My military journey began after watching ‘Saving Private Ryan,'” she shared. “Revisiting that WWII era feels full-circle, especially when highlighting female veterans and their femininity.”
The nonprofit, founded in 2006 by Gina Elise in California, raises funds for troops through WWII-inspired calendars featuring veterans. Elise drew inspiration from actress Betty Grable’s famous WWII pin-up photo. The proceeds fund hospital visits, care packages, and equipment donations to VA hospitals. To date, the organization has provided nearly $140,000 in rehab equipment and reached over 25,000 veterans in hospitals.
Patriotism has always been part of Schmidt’s life. Following the September 11 attacks, she resolved to serve in “the war of my generation.” She served as an Arabic linguist and interrogator, despite initial resistance to her deployment. Her persistence eventually changed perceptions, earning her respect among peers.
Nicknamed “Xena” by her battalion, Schmidt excelled in missions, providing critical intelligence by communicating with Iraqi women and children. Her role granted insights avoided by male soldiers due to cultural norms, providing valuable information during operations.
One memorable interrogation highlighted her keen observation skills. Disguised in civilian clothes, she caught a detainee in a lie, leading to pivotal questioning that changed the dynamic.
Now, as a model, Schmidt wants to remind Americans of their privileges. “Our freedom, especially for women, is not something I take for granted,” she stated. She emphasized the everyday freedoms many overlook, having experienced different cultures lacking such liberties. She cherishes the ability to live independently, without the need for a male guardian.
