Violence Erupts over Independence Day Weekend Across U.S.

1 hour ago 0

A holiday weekend marked by violence resulted in injuries to two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers and four children among the victims of a mass shooting at a Brooklyn family barbecue. These incidents are part of a series of shootings across the nation during Independence Day celebrations.

Coney Island Barbecue Shooting

On Saturday night, in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, eight people, including four children, were shot during a family gathering. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch detailed this at a news conference on Sunday.

An unknown man in black attire and a ski mask approached a courtyard fence and fired several shots before escaping. Police discovered 10 shell casings and a firearm with an extended magazine on the scene.

Tisch noted no initial sign of a dispute or altercation. Authorities are investigating possible links to a gang-related homicide on the same block earlier that week.

Seven of the victims are anticipated to survive, but a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The children injured are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. No arrests were made by Sunday morning.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his dismay, condemning the violence and stating there is no place for such acts in the city.

Officers Injured in Crown Heights Encounter

In a separate incident in Brooklyn, two NYPD officers faced injuries early Sunday during a confrontation with an armed 18-year-old suspect in Crown Heights.

The officers, involved in a July 4th violence-reduction operation, noticed the suspect carrying a firearm on surveillance video around 4 a.m. When he approached an unmarked police vehicle, officers attempted to engage him. The suspect fired at the vehicle, prompting three officers to return fire.

He was not hit and was apprehended after a brief foot chase, with a 9 mm handgun recovered from him. Detective Robert Carroll was hit in the back of his ballistic vest and suffered bruising, while another officer had minor injuries to his face and shoulder. Both are expected to recover fully.

Shootings in South Carolina, Florida, and Michigan

Similar violent episodes took place in other states over the holiday:

  • Hilton Head, South Carolina: Seven individuals were injured near Coligny Beach on Saturday night. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office stated the shooting arose from a physical fight between two groups in a beach access area at 8:20 p.m. Six people were questioned, and several firearms were recovered, with the investigation ongoing.
  • Pensacola, Florida: A shooting in downtown Pensacola early Sunday left one person dead and five others injured. Pensacola police reported the occurrence shortly before 1:30 a.m. Several arrests followed, with an investigation in progress.
  • Mount Clemens, Michigan: Late Saturday, five people, including two minors, were shot during a block party. Macomb County sheriff’s deputies responded to gunfire reports near Court and Clemens streets at around 11:10 p.m. All victims were hospitalized, as investigations continue.
