Stefon Diggs made a significant impact in the Washington Commanders’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Signed late in the offseason, Diggs scored his first touchdown for the Commanders during their season-opening loss on Sunday.
In the fourth quarter, Diggs brought the Commanders within two points by scoring a touchdown with 9:59 remaining. However, his celebration led to a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after he hugged the goalpost. This penalty moved the two-point try attempt back, forcing the team to settle for an extra point instead.
Commanders’ head coach Dan Quinn indicated that he would have attempted a two-point conversion had the penalty not occurred. Quarterback Jayden Daniels spoke about the impact of Diggs’ penalty on the game’s outcome. “You just gotta be smarter,” he stated, according to Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper. “We need to understand situational football better. That’s on me for not reinforcing that message in the huddle. We must be smart. There’s a time and place for everything.”
Diggs acknowledged his mishap and took responsibility after the game ended. Although Washington had another opportunity to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, they failed in their two-point attempt, resulting in a 24-22 loss at Lincoln Financial Field.
The incident was not the only factor in the outcome, but it certainly played a role in Washington’s narrow defeat.
