Wheeler’s Frustration With All-Star Selection Process

Zack Wheeler, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, has demonstrated remarkable skills this season. He recovered from thoracic outlet syndrome and is performing exceptionally well. Although Wheeler is 36, he pitches with the prowess of an All-Star. However, he has not received the title, and he attributes this to a rule he considers unfair.

In 14 starts, Wheeler boasts a 2.28 ERA (22 earned runs over 87.0 innings) and a WHIP of 0.908. These statistics represent career highs for him. He is close to qualifying for the ERA title, needing five more innings. Among pitchers who have pitched at least 80 innings, his ERA ranks as the sixth-lowest.

“It p—– me off. It’s kind of BS, so. Maybe if I wasn’t necessarily right in there, I wouldn’t be saying this, but I feel like I’ve earned it, and just because I pitch on a certain day, I can’t pitch in the All-Star Game or even be there or get the recognition for it,” Wheeler expressed.

Wheeler took to the mound against the Cincinnati Reds, pitching seven innings and allowing only one run. He struck out 14 batters, which aligns him to pitch on Sunday with normal rest, two days before the All-Star Game.

Wheeler explained that pitching on his rest days shouldn’t prevent him from participating in the All-Star Game. He noted he would have been capable of pitching an inning, which is typical for All-Star participants.

The current pitching schedules often dictate who can participate in the Midsummer Classic. This has influenced All-Star selections, although it is unclear how stringently this criterion is applied.

The selection process involves a collaboration between MLB and the MLB Players Association. They, along with players and coaches, select five starting pitchers from each league. Additional roster spots are filled thereafter. Notably, Jacob Misiorowski, Cristopher Sánchez, Chris Sale, Chase Burns, and Paul Skenes were chosen through this method.

The MLB requires that each team must have at least one representative in the All-Star Game, leading to occasional snubs like Wheeler. Further All-Star reserves could be announced, with availability determining selection.
