Willie Nelson Advocates Against Data Centers in Rural Areas

Willie Nelson called on Americans to reconsider plans for future development. At 93 years old, Nelson took to social media to urge followers to resist the encroachment of data centers on rural land. He emphasized the importance of environmental preservation.

Nelson reminisced about his roots in his Texas hometown. He cherished the ability to see “stars at night” and voiced concerns over light pollution and water depletion due to industrial expansion.

I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night.

Nelson shared his community’s need to stand against data centers invading their land. He criticized the adverse effects of these centers, which include noise, water waste, and light pollution. These factors pose a threat to small towns like Abbott.

The singer highlighted the vital role of rural America’s deep connection to land and local businesses. He argued against large industrial footprints disrupting these communities. Nelson stated, “All of America deserves thoughtful stewardship that doesn’t steal farmland and small family farmers’ livelihoods.” He added the importance of maintaining control over essential resources, especially in rural towns.

Nelson has long been an advocate for environmental causes. His Farm Aid nonprofit, co-founded with John Mellencamp and Neil Young, raised over $90 million to support family farms. The organization has worked for decades to keep farmers on their land and raise awareness of rural issues.

In response to these concerns, Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently called for a ban on data center developments in rural areas. He emphasized the need for these projects to independently finance and manage their resources, including water and electricity.
