Cam Schlittler proved his dominance on the baseball field and social media on Friday. The New York Yankees pitcher recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in a six-inning shutout against the Cincinnati Reds at Yankee Stadium, contributing to a 5-0 victory. His performance was matched by his response to online criticism.
Schlittler, a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, first faced criticism from a Boston Red Sox fan during the AL Wild Card Game in October of last season. That night, Schlittler silenced Red Sox hitters with 12 strikeouts in eight scoreless innings, but the criticism from Boston fans persisted.
After his recent start, Schlittler responded by publicly exposing fan insults. He screen-recorded the insults and posted them on his Instagram Story, captioning it “Rent Free” with laughing emojis.
The fan, using the handle “Kyle_Lynch11,” started chirping at Schlittler during the Wild Card start, calling him a clown and sending messages like “Never forget where u came from.” These messages continued for months, with persistent derogatory language.
Eventually, Schlittler responded, telling the fan to “Stop glazing lil bro.” Despite being called derisive names again, Schlittler’s performance against the Reds proved the critic wrong. He lowered his ERA to an impressive 1.71, leading the American League.
With a record of 8-3 and 109 strikeouts over 95 innings, Schlittler’s fastball, sinker, and cutter combination remain formidable. Although Lynch’s comments did not escalate to more severe threats, Schlittler has reported receiving such threats from Red Sox fans.
