Yankees Defeat Cardinals as Lombard Jr. Shines in MLB Debut

George Lombard Jr. made a remarkable debut in Major League Baseball, playing a crucial role in the New York Yankees’ 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old hit a memorable home run in the fifth inning, marking a significant moment in his young career.

Lombard struck the ball into the left-field seats off a pitch from Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins, who fell to 2-2. The home run traveled 392 feet, securing a 2-0 lead for the Yankees. This feat made Lombard the first Yankees player to homer in his debut since Jasson Domínguez did the same against Justin Verlander in Houston on September 1, 2023.

At 21 years and 63 days old, Lombard became the sixth-youngest player to make a debut for the Yankees since 1985. Additionally, he is the second-youngest shortstop in this period, following Derek Jeter, who debuted on May 29, 1995, at 20 years and 337 days old.

Lombard’s defensive skills were also on display, contributing to two inning-ending double plays. In the third inning, he made an off-balance throw to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. after fielding a grounder from Blaze Jordan. The fifth inning saw him field Nathan Church’s grounder and make a clean throw to first baseman Ben Rice after touching the second base.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. also contributed to the Yankees’ success with a home run in the second inning. Ryan Weathers, who allowed four hits and struck out six without any walks, pitched six scoreless innings. Yankees newcomer Heliot Ramos made a crucial play in the sixth, catching Jose Fermin’s flyball. David Bednar achieved his 25th save in 27 opportunities, completing the Yankees’ AL-best 12th shutout.

Hunter Dobbins allowed two runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The Cardinals faced their sixth shutout of the season. They also had to scratch All-Star outfielder Jordan Walker due to right knee inflammation just before the game started.

Next, the series concludes with St. Louis’ right-hander Andre Pallante (11-6, 3.72 ERA) facing off against New York’s right-hander Will Warren (11-6, 4.14 ERA) on Wednesday night.
