James Sapp Jr., the senior tackle at Yorkville, didn’t start his football journey early. Yet, he is making strides as he plays a crucial role for the Foxes’ defensive line. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound athlete is excelling in three sports. He mainly plays tackle, but he’s equally capable as a defensive end.
Sapp remarked on his flexibility, saying, “I can play any position on the line, but I’m mainly at tackle because of my size.” He enjoys the one-on-one battles at end, where his skills shine. His family moved from Chicago when he was three, and he started football in eighth grade due to his parents’ unfamiliarity with youth tackle programs.
Sapp also competes in basketball and track, showing prowess in shot put and discus. He qualified for the state finals in discus last spring. Despite his diverse sports involvement, football remains his priority. His recent performance in a 44-21 loss to Oswego underscores this, with a season-high 13 tackles, including four for loss and a sack. Sapp has so far achieved 35 tackles for the Foxes.
Yorkville’s coach, Dan McGuire, remarked on Sapp’s exceptional athleticism. Sapp’s 4.8-second speed in the 40-yard dash prompted McGuire to utilize him at tight end, enhancing the team’s running game. “James is so willing and good — it’s pretty special,” McGuire commented.
Sapp aims to contribute more offensively. Although yet to catch a pass, he remains optimistic about his offensive roles. “I’ve been open a couple of times,” he said, noting the coach’s high expectations due to his speed and size. Last season, Sapp recorded 48 tackles, with potential to exceed this as Yorkville enters upcoming games.
Assistant coach Todd Groth sees Sapp’s development linked to his involvement in multiple sports. “He’s a hard worker and being consistently involved helps,” Groth noted, emphasizing Sapp’s technique improvement and power. His dedication in the weight room is evident, achieving a personal best 550-pound deadlift.
Sapp’s commitment extends to academics, maintaining a 4.33 GPA. With offers from NCAA Division II and III schools, he is focused on advancing to college and pursuing football professionally. “Getting to college, I’d be pretty pumped,” Sapp stated, aiming for a scholarship and an NFL career.
