Young Mother’s Unusual Journey to Cancer Diagnosis

1 month ago 0

Aida Burkins, a 22-year-old from Hemet, California, faced an unexpected health crisis after a trip to Chicago. She is a mother of two children, aged 1 and 3, focusing mainly on raising them.

In May 2025, Burkins experienced an unusual symptom after her flight: her ear would not pop. The issue persisted upon her return home, and her condition worsened. She began experiencing bleeding that only emerged from her nose when bent over, along with deteriorating hearing, fatigue, and weight loss.

Initially, medical professionals diagnosed her with altitude sickness. However, further medical evaluation revealed a mass blocking her Eustachian tube. Burkins was then referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

Several months passed, and her hearing continued to diminish. “Everything sounded muffled, and there was constant ringing,” Burkins described. Her doctor found an inflamed mass in her adenoids during an ENT examination, suggesting the unlikely possibility of cancer given her age.

For two months, she awaited biopsy results. Meanwhile, swelling on the left side of her throat began to obscure her jawline, prompting a second biopsy.

“The doctor told me he had never seen anything quite like what I had going on,” Burkins reported. “He couldn’t be sure it was cancer, but he said it was very suspicious.”

CT scans indicated multiple lumps and swollen lymph nodes. Ultimately, the February 2026 biopsy confirmed her diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

NPC is a rare cancer of the head and neck, affecting the nasopharynx area behind the nose. Common symptoms include nasal congestion, nosebleeds, hearing difficulties, and swollen neck lymph nodes. NPC has links to the Epstein-Barr virus, genetic aspects, and environmental exposures. It is particularly rare in the U.S., with less than one case per 100,000 people annually.

Aida Burkins has undergone chemotherapy and radiation. Her doctors believe she has a good prognosis as her treatment has effectively reduced the cancer.

Burkins hopes her experience raises awareness for those with similar symptoms: Cancer doesn’t discriminate. Her story is a reminder of the importance of swift medical evaluation for persistent, unusual symptoms.

She is optimistic about her recovery, aiming to be cancer-free while enjoying her children’s growth. My babies have definitely been my rock throughout this experience, she stated. Burkins remains determined to fight and move forward.
