The Washington Wizards have chosen AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Known as a promising prospect from BYU, Dybantsa possesses the potential to become a remarkable scorer while evolving into a top-tier defender. Although his defense requires improvement, many believe he could rise to the level of a superstar, reminiscent of Kawhi Leonard or even a superior version of NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.
Despite his potential, Dybantsa might not be the standout prospect of his class. The Wizards opted for a straightforward and cautious decision by picking him. At a minimum, Dybantsa is expected to be an above-average 3-point shooter and defender, capable of being the third or fourth best player on a championship-caliber team.
In contrast, Darryn Peterson received attention after being selected by the Utah Jazz. Concerns exist over his future in the NBA due to possible disinterest, injuries, or compatibility issues within the league. Nonetheless, he exhibits polished shooting skills, solid defense, and agility. If his abilities align, he could represent Team USA in the Los Angeles Olympics within two years.
Should Peterson overcome his past challenges at Kansas and harness his potential, he could emerge as one of basketball’s elite players by his second or third year with the Jazz.
While Dybantsa is projected to become an All-Star and a top 20 player globally, comparisons with Peterson’s ceiling continue. With a history of risky decisions, the Wizards hope their strategy of choosing Dybantsa yields long-term success.
