Understanding the Clay
Roland Garros clay courts are central to the tournament’s excitement. The clay originates from Oise, north of Paris, made from specific bricks produced in France. These bricks are ground into dust less than a tenth of a millimeter for the ideal sliding surface.
Approximately 2,000 tonnes of bricks are required yearly, with around 80 tonnes used for the courts.
About Roland Garros
Named after aviator Roland Garros, the stadium complex comprises 20 courts. Court Philippe Chatrier is the largest, housing 15,000 spectators. Built in 1928, it honors the ‘Four Musketeers’: Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and René Lacoste, shaping French tennis history.
