A California father emphasized the speed with which accidents can occur near water after his daughter slipped into a pool. Keoki (Stephan) Silva, 43, was at home in Bakersfield on May 17, 2026, when his 23-month-old daughter Aria slipped in while reaching for a toy. Silva told Newsweek, “She leaned too far, lost her balance and slipped in head-first. It happened very quickly.”
Silva, who shares Aria with his wife Negin and has a stepson, Ryan, 16, and son, Silas, 4, acted without hesitation while monitoring Silas on a camera. “My only thought was getting to her immediately and getting her out safely.” Silva’s rapid response ensured Aria’s safety. He remained focused, quickly pulling her from the pool and ensuring her head stayed clear of any edges.
Silva posted the incident on Instagram (@keoki_silva), reminding others how quickly circumstances can alter: “Even when you’re right there, things can change in a split second.” Thankfully, Aria was unharmed, having held her breath effectively, and soon returned to play.
The event reiterated the importance of constant supervision around water for Silva, as drowning is a top cause of accidental deaths among young children. Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates around 357 children under 15 die annually in pool incidents, mainly at homes.
Despite the scare, Silva continues to support supervised risk-taking. “I still believe in letting kids experience things safely with supervision,” he said. He stresses being prepared, advocating for plans in case of unexpected incidents, such as choking during meals. Two weeks later, Aria returned to the pool with more caution, appearing more aware of her environment.
Silva’s experience underscores the need for vigilance, even in everyday situations. His prompt action was crucial, serving as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability near water.
