Heather McCarthy, a librarian at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School, has been working on an impactful mission. She aims to establish libraries in Zimbabwe, a country where many students lack access to books. This month, McCarthy will witness the fruits of her labor at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first completed library there.

Inspiration Behind the Initiative

McCarthy, who started her career as an English teacher in 2005, learned about the need for a library in Zimbabwe during a 2024 leadership tour with Tererai Trent. Trent’s nonprofit supports rural education in Zimbabwe, and McCarthy was moved by the joy of the children who had so little. This experience spurred her to action.

Student Engagement and Community Support

Back in Oak Lawn, McCarthy showed her students videos of the conditions at Musukwi Primary School. The students, shocked by the lack of books and proper facilities, decided to help build a library. Their efforts included a modified 6K Walk for Literacy to reflect the distance Zimbabwean students travel for water or school. The whole community joined the cause, raising $25,000.

Expanding the Vision

Motivated by their initial success, McCarthy aims to build libraries in 12 more Zimbabwean schools, needing $300,000. She launched LibrariesforZimbabwe.org to encourage schools to hold fundraisers. “I want students to help students,” McCarthy said. The initiative has garnered interest beyond Oak Lawn, with other schools eager to participate.

The impact of McCarthy’s work earned her a Gold Award at the Women Changing the World Awards in Paris. This recognition highlights her efforts in fostering global connections and enhancing education.
