Argentina Awaits Lionel Messi’s World Cup Farewell

3 weeks ago 0

Buenos Aires — Argentina recalls 1994 with regret, the year the United States hosted the World Cup and Diego Maradona was expelled due to doping. This incident marked Maradona’s last World Cup appearance, and Argentina’s exit in the round of 16. Currently, 32 years after that painful moment, Argentina is optimistic for Lionel Messi, Maradona’s successor. Turning 39 this month, Messi is expected to retire from international play after the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. If Argentina secures a consecutive World Cup victory, they will match Brazil’s back-to-back titles in 1962, enhancing Messi’s status as a legendary player.

Messi expresses his dedication to football, planning to continue until incapable, sharing his competitive nature during an interview with Joaquín “Pollo” Álvarez. This spirit has fueled his accomplishments. His preparation for the upcoming World Cup includes training in Kansas City, despite recovering from a hamstring issue from his final match with Inter Miami.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni comments on Messi’s condition and similar concerns for other players. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, defender Cristian Romero, and several others face injuries. Scaloni remains committed to players from the 2022 World Cup win, acknowledging their desire and unchanged performance levels.

Argentina begins the group stage on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City, followed by Austria and Jordan matches in Texas. Julián Álvarez’s role is crucial, with interest from major clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, and PSG. Newcomers Valentín Barco, Nicolás Paz, and Juan Manuel López add fresh energy to the team. Ángel Di María’s absence is felt, deemed irreplaceable alongside Messi.

Messi moderates expectations about winning, noting other teams as strong contenders. With records for most World Cup matches and nearing a goal record, his potential retirement hangs over fans. He indicated his competitive farewell against Venezuela last September, marking personal history at Monumental Stadium.

Scaloni shares public sentiment, unable to envision a team without Messi, paralleling past feelings for Maradona. The present remains his focus amidst inevitable changes in Argentina’s football landscape.
