A Dutch virologist known for his contributions to the Covid vaccine development is under scrutiny by U.S. federal investigators. Dr. Vincent Munster, who leads the virus ecology section at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana, faces charges of conspiring to smuggle deactivated mpox and other biological materials into the United States. This information comes from a criminal complaint unsealed recently.
Dr. Munster, 53, and his research assistant Claude Kwe, 38, from Cameroon, were stopped by customs officials at the Detroit airport. This occurred following their work in the Republic of Congo during an mpox epidemic, as stated by prosecutors in the Eastern District of Michigan.
The investigation into Dr. Munster has stirred controversy, especially among certain political circles. Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer has accused the institute of attempting to hide the incident. Her campaign has turned this case into a notable issue among some conservative groups.
In addition, White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights organization, brought public attention to the investigation through a whistle-blower report. Both Ms. Loomer and the group have suggested that Dr. Munster represents a potential national security risk. This group, critical of taxpayer-funded animal testing, accuses Munster of conducting experiments on primates and bats that they believe pose biosafety risks.
As this case unfolds, it has become a focal point for debates about scientific ethics, animal testing, and national security.
