Dispute Halts Knicks Finals Watch Party

3 weeks ago 0

On Wednesday, hours before Game 4 of the NBA finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, a watch party outside Madison Square Garden was unexpectedly canceled. This cancellation followed a disagreement between Knicks owner James Dolan and Mayor Zohran Mamdani over who was responsible for the decision.

In a statement on social media, Mayor Mamdani noted that James Dolan “decided to cancel the watch party,” describing the decision as “breaking hearts across our city.” In response, during a radio interview on “The Craig Carton Show,” Dolan accused Mayor Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch of enforcing strict security measures. Dolan suggested that these measures were intended to hinder the Knicks’ playoff journey, which has excited fans eager for a championship.

“This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, at the Mecca of basketball,” Dolan remarked. “This is what the mayor’s office and the commissioner’s office is trying to kill. They don’t want the celebration.”

A spokesperson for the Police Department affirmed earlier on Wednesday that they were ready to provide security for the watch party, indicating that the city had already sanctioned the necessary permit.

This situation is ongoing, and further information will be provided as available.
