Odell Beckham’s anticipated return to the New York Giants concluded unexpectedly when the team released him last week. Initially, Beckham remained silent, indicating appreciation for the opportunity and the brief reunion. However, his interaction on a fan’s Instagram account over the weekend revealed a different perspective.
In response to a fan’s post criticizing the Giants’ management, Beckham agreed the team underutilized him while compensating him minimally. He expressed surprise, stating, “I’m super smart, but I didn’t see this one coming. They got me!” He elaborated, “They benefited while I took the veteran minimum and earned my spot without complaint.” Beckham highlighted his disappointment about the release, adding, “As a grown man, it didn’t hurt me, but it hurt when they cut me like that. I should have known better.”
Beckham signed a one-year veteran salary benefit deal with the Giants, meaning the team wasn’t obligated to pay him the veteran minimum, nor was there any guaranteed money. The contract totaled $1.3 million. Beckham, who played for the Giants from 2014-18, was re-signed in hopes of a warm reunion. Though he claimed happiness about returning, on-field results were lacking; he was active for three games but caught no passes.
Released on September 29, Beckham felt the sting of the dismissal after reflecting on his son’s happiness and lack of understanding about the abrupt change. Beckham revealed his feelings by sharing, “What hurt me to the core was seeing my son happy with no idea what happened. Talking about my job broke me down.” He also accused the Giants of misleading him, which hindered his chances with other teams during crucial phases like training camp.
While Beckham’s candidness might have provided him some relief, airing grievances publicly might not have been wise. Teams generally avoid re-signing outspoken critics from their ranks. Despite this, changes in the Giants’ roster due to unforeseen circumstances might still alter his situation, though his open criticism could complicate future team considerations.
