As the U.S. men’s national team begins its World Cup journey on Friday in Los Angeles, all eyes will be focused on Christian Pulisic. The 27-year-old is seen as the most skilled American player of his generation. Many believe he carries the responsibility of achieving the best World Cup result for the U.S. on home turf.
Pulisic, nicknamed “Captain America,” acknowledges the pressure but aims to stay focused. “No matter where you’re playing in the World Cup, there’s pressure,” said Pulisic in an interview with NBC News in February at AC Milan’s training center. “I’m going to try to live in the moment and enjoy every minute.”
“No matter where you’re playing in the World Cup, there’s pressure.” – Christian Pulisic
This is easier said than done. Over the past thirty years, the U.S. men’s team reached the quarterfinals only once, in 2002. They missed the 2018 World Cup, didn’t get past the group stage in 2006, and were knocked out in the round of 16 in 2010, 2014, and 2022. Fans and commentators continue to question the potential of the current group, called “The Golden Generation” due to its young talents.
Former U.S. defender Alexi Lalas expressed his views at a recent news conference. He highlighted the resources and opportunities given to this generation. “This is a generation that has been provided everything, and we should expect more,” Lalas said.
Pulisic, in particular, has been under scrutiny. Last summer, he chose not to join Team USA in the CONCACAF Gold Cup to prioritize his mental and physical well-being. The move faced backlash from fans and former players questioning his commitment. Concerns have also arisen regarding his club performance. Despite standout seasons at AC Milan in Serie A, his performance was inconsistent during the 2025-26 season. He missed seven matches due to minor injuries and did not score in 2026.
Pulisic’s leadership style is also a topic of discussion. Describing himself as an introvert, he prefers leading by example. U.S. teammate Weston McKennie supports this view. “I think the worst thing people can do is add more pressure to what he already feels,” McKennie said to NBC News. “He knows he’s the face of the team and bears much of the responsibility.”
Jozy Altidore, who witnessed Pulisic’s early days with the national team, praised his abilities and growth. “Christian was always humble, respectful, and hardworking,” Altidore said, now an analyst for Telemundo. He believes that Pulisic’s past challenges have contributed to his development. “Negative experiences harden you,” Altidore noted. “He’s faced dark moments and emerged stronger.”
Pulisic’s capabilities shined in an international friendly against Senegal on May 31. He delivered a goal and an assist, leading the U.S. to a 3-2 victory. This performance demonstrated his potential to significantly impact the tournament.
“Now that the world’s eyes are on us, he has a chance to capture attention and admiration.” – Tim Howard
Former U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard sees the World Cup as an opportunity for Pulisic to enhance his reputation. “If the team performs well, so will he, and it could elevate him further,” Howard remarked.
Pulisic remains level-headed amidst high expectations. He focuses on the team’s performance against strong opponents rather than specific outcomes. “I don’t want to set a specific target,” he explained. “Producing excellent performances against top teams is our goal, and I believe results will follow.”
