Prosecutors in Cook County have decided to drop charges against two men accused of igniting a fire in a vacant building in Chicago. The fire resulted in the death of firefighter Jermaine Pelt. This decision came shortly before the scheduled jury trial.
Details of the Case
Anthony Moore, 49, and Nicholas Virgil, 39, had faced serious charges related to the fire on South Wallace Street. The fire also impacted neighboring homes. Jermaine Pelt, a dedicated firefighter, lost his life in the line of duty on April 4, 2023.
Virgil had been charged with murder and aggravated arson, among other offenses. Moore was facing charges including fraud and forgery. These accusations stemmed from a year-long investigation that alleged the use of hand sanitizer to start the fire.
The charges against a third man, Martez Cristler, 24, were dismissed in 2024. Prosecutors claimed the suspects planned to file a fraudulent insurance claim by pretending the building was occupied.
“Virgil has been fighting to clear his name for nearly two years,” said Matthew Hendrickson from the Cook County Public Defender’s Office.
Legal Developments
Virgil spent time in jail before being released on electronic monitoring. Hendrickson noted the decision to drop charges reflects their weak case against Virgil.
While Moore’s attorney has not commented, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office affirmed its ongoing commitment to justice for Pelt. They indicated continued evaluation of the evidence.
The Incident
On the night of the fire, Pelt was responding to a blaze in the West Pullman area. After entering a neighboring building, he was later found unresponsive due to smoke conditions. His colleagues discovered him under debris with a dislodged mask.
Investigators detected the smell of hand sanitizer and concluded the fire was deliberately set. Moore attempted to substantiate a claim of financial loss through a lease agreement.
Remembering Jermaine Pelt
Pelt grew up in the neighborhood where he served as a firefighter. He had close ties to his community and family, recently walking his daughter down the aisle before his tragic death.
