Utah’s Iron Fire Prompts Evacuations
Extreme heat and dry, windy conditions have ignited several wildfires in the Western U.S., including a significant blaze in Utah that led to evacuations. Known as the Iron Fire, this wildfire in Utah’s Juab County was detected on Saturday. It has since affected 34 square miles (87 square kilometers). Located about 70 miles (113 kilometers) southwest of Salt Lake City, the fire prompted evacuations in the town of Eureka, population 1,000, and impacted nearby ranch areas.
No homes were reported lost. Utah Fire Info stated in a post on X that a successful backburn operation was conducted to protect the town. Kelly Wickens, from the Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands, highlighted the ongoing growth of the fire due to drought conditions. The fire was identified as human-caused and is under investigation. Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox visited the area, commenting on the increased fire danger and the multiple fires occurring.
Currently, Utah has six active wildfires at various levels of containment.
Arizona and Other Regions Face Wildfire Challenges
In Arizona, a wildfire near Sedona triggered evacuations over the weekend. This fire burned around 300 acres (120 hectares) of challenging terrain near Oak Creek Canyon. Approximately 300 fire personnel were engaged in battling the uncontained blaze. Evacuated residents were not yet permitted to return home.
Much of the Western U.S., from the Rockies to the Pacific coast, experienced above-average temperatures last weekend, with even hotter temperatures forecasted for this week. Officials have warned that extended periods of dry, hot weather with low humidity elevate fire risks.
Utah is facing severe to extreme drought. Parts of Arizona and Colorado also report severe drought conditions, as indicated by the U.S. Drought Monitor. In Colorado, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning until Monday in the southwest due to gusty winds and low humidity.
Impact of Extreme Heat
Extreme temperatures have caused fatalities, with three hikers dying during two separate incidents last week in the Grand Canyon. As temperatures rise in the Southwest on Sunday, Carlsbad, New Mexico could reach up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 C).
Fire Management Efforts in Florida
Meanwhile, in Florida, the Florida Forest Service announced progress in containing brush fires in western Miami-Dade County. Fire personnel from across the state have almost fully managed these fires.
