2 weeks ago 0

The Harvey Fire Department is investigating a multi-structure fire that occurred on June 2 as potential arson. The fire, which burned several abandoned homes on Turlington Road, is under scrutiny after evidence suggested intentional setting, according to a statement from the department.

Fire officials reported that the blaze began at 2:30 a.m. on the 15400 block of Turlington Road and was controlled by 4 a.m. The department is conducting additional forensic analysis and investigative work to confirm initial findings. Fire Chief Howard Fisher emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating that identifying those responsible is a top priority. Ensuring the safety of residents, businesses, and firefighters remains paramount.

We take these incidents very seriously and are committed to identifying those responsible.

The fire, ignited in two fully engulfed structures, spread to two additional abandoned buildings due to intense radiant heat and active power line hazards. As a precaution, ComEd temporarily disconnected power in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Fire department electricians discovered a kitten in the debris following the blaze on Turlington Road. The department is collaborating with state and local partners in this investigation and is seeking information from the public. Anyone with relevant details is encouraged to contact 708-331-7720.

In recent months, Harvey has faced significant challenges after declaring financial distress. Approximately 40% of city workers were furloughed in October, including nearly half of the Fire Department. To address gaps, the city has relied on mutual aid from neighboring communities over the past seven months.
