L.A. Mayoral Debate Analysis: Bass vs. Raman

2 hours ago 0

Karen Bass and Nithya Raman faced off in a crucial L.A. mayoral debate hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo52 in Universal City. This was their last head-to-head meeting before the November 3 election. Times columnists Lorraine Ali, Gustavo Arellano, and Steve Lopez shared their insights on the debate’s highlights and challenges.

Analysis by Gustavo Arellano

According to Arellano, Nithya Raman started strong by quoting Ronald Reagan with the question, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” This resonated with many Angelenos who may not feel an improvement in their lives. However, throughout the debate, Bass managed to put Raman on the defensive, forcing her to focus on refuting criticisms rather than promoting her vision. Bass appeared at ease, rarely needing to reference her notes, highlighting her preparation and confidence.

Raman’s responses were direct, though she occasionally interrupted the moderators and appeared unsure, frequently glancing at her notes. Although Raman leads Bass in the polls, her performance in this debate emphasized her need to communicate confidently.

Insights from Steve Lopez

Lopez expressed that the debate was crucial but not necessarily decisive in the election race. Raman has previously led in polls, while Bass faces criticism for her handling of issues like homelessness and the Palisades fire. Lopez noted that voters remain undecided, and this debate might not have provided the clarity they sought.

The question of Raman’s ability to form coalitions with the city council was raised, as even Democratic Socialists of America members hadn’t endorsed her. Bass received support from 13 out of 15 council members, which could prove advantageous for her. Nonetheless, Lopez highlighted a need for voters to understand Raman’s stance on key issues and how she plans to lead the city.

Comments from Lorraine Ali

Ali highlighted the debate’s less charged tone compared to their August confrontation. Bass maintained composure and command, while Raman, despite leading in the polls, did not deliver a solid enough performance to destabilize Bass effectively. Both candidates debated their records on crucial issues like homelessness, with Bass suggesting Raman was “not ready for prime time.”

The debate’s impact remains in question, especially given low viewer engagement. The absence of charisma in both candidates might affect their appeal, but Bass’s presence as a leader was clear, giving her an edge according to Ali.

As the election approaches, the undecided voter block remains pivotal, and performances like this debate could sway opinions before the polls close.
