Caleb Flynn, a former “American Idol” contestant and pastor, was sentenced to life without parole in Ohio for the murder of his wife. A jury found him guilty of shooting Ashley Flynn, 37, twice in the head while she slept. Prosecutors argue he staged the crime scene to look like a break-in and then called 911 to report an intruder.
In court, Flynn did not testify in his defense but professed his innocence before sentencing. “I have lied about many things, but I did not kill my wife,” he stated. He expressed his intention to continue fighting to prove his innocence.
Ashley Flynn’s mother, Jill Smith, read a statement from the couple’s daughter, Alyssa. The statement expressed deep love yet sadness over the situation. “Confessing would be the least you could do,” Alyssa’s message suggested. She declared she does not plan to visit him in prison.
The sentencing judge, Jeannine Pratt, said Flynn’s actions showed abhorrent deceit and manipulation. She criticized him for using faith to manipulate others. Flynn faced nine charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. The aggravated murder charge resulted in a life sentence.
Testimony from Alleigha Botner, Flynn’s former lover, revealed thousands of incriminating text messages. Botner detailed an 18-month affair with Flynn. Messages read in court showed Flynn expressing desires for his wife’s death.
Despite his claims of wanting Ashley dead, FBI Agent Andrea Kinzig testified there was no evidence Ashley had an affair. Flynn’s texts to Botner included morbid fantasies about killing his wife without consequence.
