Sean Penn, renowned for his Oscar-winning performances, is set to direct a new film about a police officer involved in the January 6 Capitol riot, as announced by Warner Bros. This project, currently untitled, will be directed from Penn’s own script. Bradley Cooper is in talks to star in the film, although discussions are ongoing and no final agreement has been made.
The film centers on a protagonist based on a real person, though specific details about this character have not been disclosed. During the 2022 hearings of the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol, Penn attended as an observer. He was seated between two officers: Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges of the Metropolitan Police in Washington, D.C.
Michael Fanone shared in his testimony that he responded to the riot scene, where he faced violent assaults. He recounted being ‘grabbed, beaten, tased,’ and labeled a traitor. The intensity of the attack led to a heart attack, which only subsided after he mentioned his children. His colleague, Daniel Hodges, also provided testimony regarding the traumatic events he encountered.
At the hearings, Penn expressed his intent as a concerned citizen, aiming to ‘observe and see if justice would be served.’ The film promises to explore an ‘unexpected friendship.’ Filming is anticipated to begin in mid-2027.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of major industry news. The U.S. Justice Department confirmed it will not oppose Paramount Skydance’s acquisition deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. Valued at $111 billion, this agreement will essentially hand control of Warner Bros. to Paramount’s CEO, David Ellison. Ellison, linked to Oracle founder Larry Ellison, maintains strong connections with former President Donald Trump.
In related events, David Ellison recently attended an Ultimate Fighting Championship event hosted at the White House. Penn’s previous film, ‘One Battle After Another,’ earned critical acclaim for its political commentary, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Sean Penn, who portrayed Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in the film, received his third Oscar. However, he chose to miss the award ceremony to support Ukraine.
