The Kennedy Center in Washington is evaluating options for its operational future after a federal judge blocked its initial plan for a two-year closure. The plan was part of a larger renovation initiative. Despite this, the center’s management remains non-committal about scheduling new shows or expanding its staffing.
In a recent court filing, the Kennedy Center’s legal team indicated that while the public spaces will remain open, there is no obligation to reschedule previously canceled events or to seek new programming. This decision follows a ruling by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, which halted many actions taken by the board, deemed to be dominated by allies of former President Donald Trump.
Previously, the board added Trump’s name to the building unlawfully, a move that Judge Cooper reversed when he ordered it removed. He also blocked the planned closure, requiring the Kennedy Center and Rep. Joyce Beatty, who initiated the lawsuit, to provide a status update by a given deadline.
As part of the response, the Kennedy Center’s management plans to present the board with several renovation options. These include a total closure, a partial closure allowing limited public access, or phased closures to address critical infrastructure issues while maintaining programming. A vote on these recommendations will occur in mid-July, though final recommendations are pending.
Opposing this, Beatty’s legal team contends that the center has not fully adhered to Cooper’s order. Although Trump’s name has been removed, the presence of a tarp covering the letters’ previous location has drawn criticism. Beatty argues that the lack of initiative to restore programming contradicts the legal ruling, effectively resulting in a de facto closure.
