In Edinburgh, police and counterterrorism officials are probing a series of anti-Muslim assaults that left five men injured. The attacks began near a mosque, where two men were attacked shortly before 9 p.m. on a Friday evening, as reported by BBC News. Authorities identified the suspect as a 36-year-old Scottish man.
The suspect continued his assault spree, allegedly targeting three more men in a different part of the city. The victims, aged between 22 and 39, sustained injuries that are not life-threatening. While three of the injured were hospitalized, police ensured public safety remained a priority during the rapid sequence of events across the city.
The suspect’s violent actions included allegedly attacking a vehicle at a gas station, smashing its windows, and leaving an axe inside. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him wielding a weapon outside a pizzeria, causing chaos in parts of the city, according to social media videos.
Police Scotland stated they responded to several emergency reports before apprehending the suspect at around 9:30 p.m. local time. Addressing the incident, Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton condemned the shocking attack, expressing support for those injured and affected.
Paton emphasized zero tolerance for racism and faith-based hatred, reinforcing Scotland’s commitment to unity. The arrested man allegedly claimed he was “protecting the country” upon his detention, as detailed by BBC News. Investigations are ongoing in collaboration with Counter Terrorism Policing, under the guidance of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
The Muslim Council of Britain criticized the attack, acknowledging community concerns and urging vigilance against Islamophobic hate crimes. They linked the incident to prior racist events in Belfast, attributing it to harmful political rhetoric targeting minorities. The Council encourages reporting of any similar hate crimes.
