Angel Reese’s Influence on and off the Court

1 week ago 0

Angel Reese, a standout player for the Atlanta Dream, captivated audiences by singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at Caitlin Clark’s residence ahead of Juneteenth. Following her team’s victory over the Indiana Fever, Reese discussed the experience and the reception she received from the opposition’s fans.

Reese faced boos from Fever supporters in Indiana but expressed gratitude for being a Black woman in her position. She emphasized the importance of representation and using her platform to voice her beliefs, especially for young Black individuals watching. Reese highlighted that performing the Black National Anthem connected her to those who paved the way before her.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” holds significance as the Black National Anthem, originally penned as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900, with music by John Rosamond Johnson. It was first performed by schoolchildren in Jacksonville, Florida, for Lincoln’s birthday celebration. The song is integrated into Juneteenth celebrations by the WNBA, played during events that highlight social justice initiatives.

Reese previously addressed allegations of racist behavior from Caitlin Clark’s fans in an episode of her podcast. She pointed out that while loyalty to Clark is expected, some fans cross lines into disrespect and racism. An investigation by the WNBA into an earlier incident found no evidence of such accusations, but Reese acknowledged the issue, underscoring a need for change.

This week was significant for Reese and Clark, ranked among the most-viewed WNBA players. They faced off twice in three days, with Atlanta winning both games. Reese’s performance included a milestone as she became the fastest in league history to reach 1,000 rebounds, overtaking Tina Charles by ten games.

Reese was traded to the Dream from Chicago Sky, a move marking her as a two-time All-Star joining an Atlanta team on a historic trajectory. Reese and Clark’s competitive history dates back to college, with their notable NCAA championship game attracting record viewership.
