Irish soccer officials and Israeli journalists faced off at a press conference on Saturday amid rising tensions ahead of their Nations League match scheduled in Serbia. The controversy erupted when a journalist brought up Irish players’ support for Palestinians following the Flydubai incident from earlier in the week.
Football Association of Ireland (FAI) communications manager Kieran Crowley attempted to deflect the question, emphasizing their intent to focus solely on “football questions.” However, the conversation didn’t end there. Another journalist from Israel queried Crowley about allegations of racist comments by Irish players toward their Israeli counterparts. Crowley forcefully denied this accusation, stating, “That’s completely untrue.” The press event concluded soon afterward.
Earlier, Ireland had defeated Israel 3-0 in their first Nations League encounter. The match occurred amidst significant discussions among Irish players on whether they should proceed with the game. During the match, Irish players wore black armbands and refrained from shaking the hands of Israeli players as a form of protest.
Pressure from various groups in Ireland was evident, urging the soccer team to boycott the match due to Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, causing tragic loss of life with over 1,000 Israelis dead. To alleviate tensions, the FAI shifted the match venue to a neutral location, citing “operational reasons” back in June. The first match was located in Hungary, while the subsequent game is scheduled in Serbia.
The FAI continued to feel external pressures, with public protests calling for the boycott of the upcoming game against Israel, notably near the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. In a significant move in November, the FAI proposed a motion to UEFA advocating for the ban of Israel from club and international competitions. Nonetheless, they resisted calls for a boycott, concerned about potential UEFA sanctions against the team.
