Colorado Rockies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates: Controversial Game Ends in Denver

1 week ago 0

The Colorado Rockies faced the Pittsburgh Pirates in a tense baseball game that concluded with a controversial decision on Saturday night. The game began with an impressive start from Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy, who hit an inside-the-park leadoff home run against the Pirates’ star pitcher Paul Skenes.

Despite McCarthy’s early heroics, Colorado emerged with a narrow 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh. The Pirates believed they had tied the game in the ninth inning, but a disputed call changed the course of events.

Pirates manager Don Kelly found himself in a heated exchange with umpire Todd Tichenor after a crucial force out ended the ninth inning. The tension arose when Pirates batter Jake Mangum hit a grounder to Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros. As Karros approached the ball, he encountered baserunner Billy Cook at the same moment. Initially, the umpires ruled everyone safe, which would have led to a tied game.

However, after conferring, the umpires decided Cook was out due to baserunner interference. Pittsburgh’s manager was visibly frustrated by this decision. “The runner failed to avoid the defender in the act of fielding the baseball; therefore, he’s called out. It’s very simple,” explained crew chief Todd Tichenor.

Karros later mentioned that Cook’s cleat “kind of clipped my glove” during the interaction. Although Kelly agreed Cook touched Karros’ glove, he questioned the need for the umpires’ huddle.

Cook expressed his surprise, stating he only realized contact was made upon viewing the replay. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, the game did not progress in their favor.

In an earlier highlight, Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz hit a home run in the first inning, accounting for their only run. Colorado’s T.J. Rumfield drove in McCarthy, adding to their score.

Following this match, the Rockies improved their season record to 30-47, while the Pirates dropped to 38-39.
