Recent disclosures about the FBI’s tracking of Trump family travel and the phone records of top aide Susie Wiles have sparked strong reactions. These actions were part of an investigation named “Plasmic Echo” that looked into Trump’s handling of classified documents. The FBI monitored travel by Melania Trump and Barron Trump and scrutinized Wiles’ phone calls.
Julian Epstein, a former Democratic leader in the House Judiciary Committee, compared this to Nixon-era abuses during the Watergate scandal. Epstein expressed concerns, saying, “It’s hard to think of good justifications for this. To me, it feels a little Nixonian.” He stressed that clarity is needed regarding the surveillance of family members and advisors.
Nixon, a Republican, used an “Enemies List” to target political adversaries. Epstein questioned the legality of monitoring communications involving lawyers and the press, stating, “[That] seems like a stretch.” He stands among the few Democrats openly criticizing these tactics, highlighting a need for more facts and transparency.
Previously, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, voiced concerns over undisclosed subpoenas in Smith’s probe, acknowledging Republican concerns. Recently, the Senate Judiciary Committee exposed records showing the probe’s review of communications between Trump White House officials and numerous Congress members.
Theo Wold, a former U.S. assistant attorney general under Trump, mentioned that these disclosures validate Republican warnings about what they term the “Deep State.” He highlighted alleged abuses of power against various groups and political figures for political purposes.
The White House criticized these surveillance tactics, calling them an abuse of power. Lauren Bis, a White House spokesperson, remarked, “Spying on political opponents is weaponization of law enforcement, plain and simple.” Calls made or received by Wiles and associated with campaign contacts and Melania Trump were logged, questioning the investigation’s reach.
Former RNC official Elizabeth Pipko emphasized Wiles’ achievements, urging critics not to celebrate surveillance of someone with her record. She noted, “Her story should inspire young women.”
These revelations follow Sen. Charles Grassley confirming that media communications, including those with Fox News, were obtained in the probe. These developments continue to attract significant discussion and concern regarding governmental surveillance practices.
