New York Congressional Candidates in Final Campaign Push

1 week ago 0

New York’s congressional candidates are making their final appeals to voters on the last full day of campaigning before the primary election. The contest showcases a battle between progressive candidates and establishment Democrats.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s influence is at stake as he supports a group of House candidates. His support includes campaign videos and a rally with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders to energize voters. Mamdani stated, “The party of the past will not be what leads us into the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone.”

In another race, Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, aims to leverage his family legacy and social media presence to win a congressional seat in Manhattan. He faces opposition from Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, both state Assembly members with strong records. George Conway, an attorney and former Trump critic, is also a candidate. Schlossberg attracted attention with campaign efforts that included appearances by David Letterman and campaign ads from his mother, Caroline Kennedy.

Alex Bores has focused on tech issues, releasing ads about artificial intelligence and highlighting opposition from major tech companies. Micah Lasher engaged voters directly and emphasized his government experience.

Mamdani has not endorsed anyone in Schlossberg’s race, concentrating on three other contests involving incumbents. Darializa Avila Chevalier, supported by Mamdani, challenges U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Her past social media posts have become a focal point, but she has expressed regret and apologized during recent debates.

Former city Comptroller Brad Lander, endorsed by Mamdani, seeks to unseat U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander strengthened his campaign by aligning with the mayor, contrasting Goldman’s independent efforts in Congress.

Claire Valdez, a former colleague of Mamdani in the state Assembly, aims to defeat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez. Both candidates share progressive ideals, but Valdez emphasizes her potential as an ally for Mamdani in Washington.
