Jeff Metcalf, the father of Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old who was tragically murdered, shared his thoughts on the trial of Karmelo Anthony and discussed the recent evidence released. Metcalf criticized the media for transforming his son’s murder into a political and racial issue, emphasizing the significance of character rather than race.
In an interview on ‘The Will Cain Show,’ Metcalf accused pundits of exploiting his son’s death for their own gains, seeking attention or clicks. He stated, ‘They’re looking for their 15 minutes of fame, or their clickbait or their clicks. They’re just looking to monetize the death of my son.’
Recently released evidence has provided greater clarity on the events surrounding the fatal stabbing in 2025. Police body camera footage from the incident shows the moment Anthony was handcuffed, responding ‘I’m not alleged. I did it,’ when referred to as the ‘alleged suspect.’
Metcalf responded to comments made by ‘The View’ co-host Sunny Hostin, who questioned why Anthony’s case wasn’t deemed self-defense. Metcalf criticized Hostin’s public comments, suggesting she lacked understanding of the case’s facts and emphasized that she should not speak on matters she is ignorant of.
The Austin Metcalf murder trial became a topic of national interest, with debates centered around racial issues and Anthony’s self-defense claim. Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Jeff Metcalf denounced the politicization and racial framing of his son’s murder case, stating, ‘Please don’t make this about race, please don’t politicize it.’
Jeff Metcalf openly shared his disappointment with the focus on race, asserting that his perspective remained color-blind. He valued judging individuals based on their character and actions, rather than race.
During discussions, Metcalf expressed understanding toward Anthony, mentioning that Anthony’s parents deserted him in the courtroom during pivotal moments of the trial. The court was left with Anthony, alone, to face the consequences after the guilty verdict was announced.
Responding to questions regarding contact from Anthony’s family, Metcalf confirmed he had received no apologies or expressions of remorse from them.
Reflecting on his son’s legacy, Metcalf remembered Austin as a compassionate leader and described the lifelong impact of the trauma caused by his murder. He highlighted Austin’s support of younger teammates and his proactive approach in guiding them through transitions in school.
