Colombia Defeats DR Congo to Advance in World Cup

In Guadalajara, Mexico, Daniel Muñoz played a crucial role in Colombia’s progression to the World Cup knockout stage. Colombia secured a 1-0 victory against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Tuesday night.

Muñoz scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute. This came after Congo’s goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi, made five impressive saves in the initial 20 minutes of the match. Mpasi could not prevent Muñoz’s left-footed shot from going in after it deflected off a defender. This marked Muñoz’s second goal in the tournament.

Congo had two near-equalizing opportunities during stoppage time. Colombia’s goalkeeper, Camilo Vargas, managed a significant save from a long-range attempt by Nathanael Mbuku. He also stopped a header by Chancel Mbemba after the ensuing corner kick.

Colombian forward Luis Díaz had two goals disallowed in quick succession late in the second half. The first was annulled for a foul in the 79th minute, and the second for offside in the 80th minute.

Congo began its first World Cup in 52 years with an unexpected 1-1 draw against Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Colombia leads Group K with six points from two matches, two ahead of Portugal and five ahead of Congo. Portugal dominated Uzbekistan 5-0 earlier that day, with Ronaldo scoring twice in Houston.

Colombia needs only a draw against Portugal on Saturday to clinch the group. A draw would also qualify Portugal for the knockout stage. Colombia, ranked 11th globally and third in South America behind Brazil and Argentina, opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

Congo, ranked 47th in the world, faced challenges in its World Cup preparations due to an Ebola outbreak. Many Congolese fans were unable to travel to the tournament because of Ebola-related restrictions.

One notable fan, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, known as Lumumba Vea, made headlines during the Africa Cup of Nations. He is recognized for imitating a statue of Congo’s independence hero, Patrice Lumumba. Due to quarantine measures, he missed the first game but attended the match in Guadalajara, maintaining his statue-like pose throughout.

Colombia has never participated in a scoreless draw in its 23 World Cup appearances. Playmaker James Rodríguez has joined Colombian legends Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama by reaching 10 World Cup appearances.
