Olivia Rodrigo emerged as the first breakthrough pop star of this decade, transitioning from a Disney Channel star to a fresh voice in confessional songwriting. Her hit songs like “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” showcase her blend of power balladry and pop-punk, resonating deeply with young female fans.
Now at 23, Rodrigo reflects on life after her first significant relationship in her third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love,” set for release on June 12. The album features 13 tracks that chronicle the journey of a relationship from its joyful start to its inevitable end. Songs like “Drop Dead,” beginning with a thrilling new connection, and “stupid song” express the intoxicating feeling of falling in love. Tracks such as “Maggots for Brains” and “My Way” introduce tensions and unexplained issues, while “Begged” and “Cigarette Smoke” capture the grim realities and eventual acceptance of a breakup.
Rodrigo had initially aimed to convey newfound happiness in a way that felt fresh. In an interview with The New York Times’ Popcast, she shared the challenge of writing about contentment without losing her signature emotional depth. She wanted to move beyond her reputation for angry, sad breakup songs and prove she could create meaningful music from a place of joy.
During the album’s creation, her personal life influenced its direction. Working with producer Dan Nigro, who had collaborated on her previous records, Rodrigo adjusted the narrative to reflect her true experiences. She found herself revisiting and revising existing love songs, injecting honesty, sadness, and a touch of the uncanny to authentically portray her journey through love and its aftermath.
